Sacred Hill Wins Silver Decanter World Wine Awards

Immediate Release
Sacred Hill Wins Silver at 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards

This year, The 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards qualified as the biggest international wine competition with more entries this year than any other leading wine competition in the world.

The 2007 Deerstalkers Syrah is one of Sacred Hill’s 2007 Special Selection Releases.  The winning vintage originates from the Winery’s Estate vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels sub region of Hawke’s Bay.. Here winemakers applied rigorous crop and canopy management to reach new heights in precision viticulture in order to find the best possible expression of Syrah in their unique region. Already this unique vineyard has won wide international acclaim with Sacred Hill Helmsman Cabernet Merlot.

This wine spent 14 months in French oak barriques, followed by 12 months in bottle prior to release. Sumptuous, rich and deeply layered, this defining Syrah from Sacred Hill has been touted their finest vintage produced to date at the time of its release in August 2009.

Says Sacred Hill Chief Winemaker, Tony Bish:

“Hawke’s Bay Syrah is without any doubt New Zealand’s most exciting new wine style. Following on from our world renowned success with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and regional Pinot Noirs. Syrah’s such as this from the Gimblett Gravels are creating significant international acclaim. We have a purity of fruit and depth of flavor expression that is both unique and inspiring.

In total 10,983 wines were entered in The 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards, more than double the amount from when the competition was launched seven years ago. Decanter’s rigorous juding process and superb line-up of judges elevates this competition to one of the worlds most prestigous events..

Gerard Bassett MW, the world’s only Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and Wine MBA, is an indication of the judging calibre that’s made the competition the most sought after in the world.

All wines are blind tasted, with 68.8% off wines receiving an accolade in 2010, yet only 11.9% won silver, with just 2.86% winning the covetted Gold or Regional Trophy.

The 2007 Sacred Hill Deerstalkers Syrah is available from Glengary stores and other fine wine outlets nationwide at a RRP of $49.90.
