$2,000 shopping spree for Glenfield teenager
Seventeen-year-old Kathy Lee of Glenfield and her two younger sisters Debbie and Carol recently enjoyed a $2,000 shopping spree with a personal stylist, as well as a makeover and Yum Cha, thanks to Make-A-Wish New Zealand and the Newmarket Business Association.
Kathy Lee, who has Burkitts Leukaemia, was completely surprised when a stretched limousine arrived at her home to pick up the three sisters.
Kathy was also surprised to be met in Newmarket by personal stylist Jackie O’Fee of Signature Style who wasted no time, taking the girls straight to Newmarket’s many fashionable shops.
After nearly two hours of shopping in the country’s fashion capital, and a lot of helpful guidance from Jackie O’Fee, the girls were invited by Smith and Caughey’s Newmarket for a free makeover and consultation. Kathy was pampered at the MAC counter while her two sisters were looked after by Clinique and Bobbi Brown.
“It was a really exiting day full of surprises. As well as all the shopping, I had no idea I was going to get a makeover as well,” says Kathy.
All that shopping and make-up is enough to make any girls hungry, but thanks to award- winning Chinese restaurant, Pearl Garden, they weren’t hungry for long. The three experienced the Teed Street restaurant’s famous atmosphere, and dined out on the best Yum Cha in town.
“Yum Char was amazing. We didn’t know what we were doing at first but we soon got the hang of it,” says Kathy.
Cameron Brewer, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association, says Newmarket was thrilled to play a part in making Kathy’s wish come true.
“Jackie O’Fee, Smith & Caughey’s Newmarket, and Pearl Garden restaurant did not hesitate to come to the party. They were key in making the day so special. Kathy and her sisters had a great time and we’re delighted she chose Newmarket as the dream destination. They are great girls and their family should be very proud,” said Mr Brewer.
Scott Simpson, CEO of Make-A-Wish New Zealand, said Kathy and her sisters loved their day in Newmarket, which came a week after World Wish Day marking the 30th anniversary of the foundation granting the first wish in the United States.
