Students fighting obesity win award
Convincing children to eat an apple instead of a burger is never an easy task, but one creative bunch of Auckland
students is taking little steps towards changing that and now has an award to prove it!
Little Steps, a student company from St Mary’s College, took out first place at last night’s Lion Foundation Young
Enterprise Scheme business presentation finals for Auckland Central, wowing judges with their illustrated children’s
book fighting obesity by guiding children towards a healthier diet.
“All competing teams were inspirational,” says judge Kath Allen from MediaWorks, “we were flabbergasted by the
innovation and professionalism shown by students taking on the business world.
“Little Steps book, Bert’s Big Day, is a fantastic idea and the team’s passion to make a difference in the community
shone through in their presentation.”
Auckland City Mayor John Banks presented first prize and encouraged each student to embrace what makes them unique
stating: “Work on your competitive advantage and you’ll fly with the eagles.”
Ten secondary school student businesses treated the 220 strong audience to an entertaining display of their business
products which included the Pooperloop, an inexpensive and hands-free accessory for dog owners; e-tagging - solar
powered LED advertising; and Hand’s on - rugby balls with hand guides to teach the perfect pass technique.
Enterprise North Shore, who facilitates the programme in Auckland Central, North Shore and Rodney, was delighted with
the calibre of presentations. Chief executive Terry Hoskins says, “The Auckland Central students showed amazing levels
of entrepreneurial ability. The level of ambition and creativity they already possess signals the future of business in
Auckland will be in excellent hands in years to come.”
Second place went to Zenzic from St Cuthbert’s with their reusable laptop skins, with third place going to Loisir
Enterprises from Auckland International College and their portable and adjustable laptop table.
St Cuthbert’s College Hydr8 Solutions, who produce BPA free drink bottles, won the Lochiel Printing Limited Business
Card competition and received 200 cards of their winning design.
