Government gives ‘pay rise’, will employers follow

Government gives ‘pay rise’, will employers follow suit?

A new Watercooler survey conducted by seek.co.nz found 78% of Kiwi’s believe that the reduced personal income tax rates announced by the Government yesterday will be the closest thing they get to a pay rise this year.

From 1 October 2010 all personal tax rates will be cut with the average family expected to be $25 per week better off under the changes.

SEEK’s poll results show that New Zealanders believe this will be the only income increase they receive this year, with many picking that employers won’t be as forthcoming as the Government.

“Our latest Watercooler poll reveals almost 80% of New Zealanders don’t hold much hope for a pay rise in 2010. Employees have told us that over the last two years they have been more worried about having and keeping a job than pushing for pay rises, but as the economy improves this attitude will change,” says Annemarie Duff, General Manager of SEEK New Zealand.

“Currently seven out of ten Kiwis are keeping their eyes open for other employment opportunities and we have seen a record number of people on seek.co.nz checking out their options. Reward and recognition has never been more important to keep good staff and the cost of a pay rise needs to be weighed up against the cost of recruiting and training a new employee.”
