Meridian holding open days for North Canterbury wind farm project

People living in the area where Meridian is planning a new wind farm, in Hurunui, North Canterbury, will have the opportunity to find out more about the proposal at two open days planned for next week.

The first open day will be held between 2.00pm and 8.00pm next Tuesday, May 18, at the Glenmark Rugby Club in Omihi. The second open day will take place between 2.00pm and 8.00pm the following day, May 19, at the Greta Café and Bar.

Meridian’s Wind Project development Manager Alan McKinney says there will be information sheets on all aspects of the project, visual simulations to show what the project will look like, and Meridian staff will be on hand to answer people’s questions.

“We want to make sure as many people as possible who are interested in finding out more information on Project Hurunui Wind will have the opportunity to do so, so that is why we are holding two open days.”

Mr McKinney says that the feedback from the community to date has generally been very positive since the project was announced in March.

The proposed wind farm is located about 66 kilometres north of Christchurch, within the territorial boundaries of Hurunui District Council, and is situated between the Greta and Omihi communities.

It would consist of 33 wind turbines with a combined generating capacity of about 76 megawatts (MW).
