2degrees supportive of Commerce Commission’s revised draft recommendation
2degrees, New Zealand’s newest mobile communications company, is supportive of the Commerce Commission’s draft reconsideration released today now recommending regulation of mobile termination rates.
2degrees Chief Operating Officer, Bill McCabe, says “Both the Minister and the Commission should be commended for their rigorous approach to ensuring that consumers will benefit from much greater competition in this critical industry. ”
The Commerce Commission’s draft view is that the Minister for Communications and Information Technology should regulate mobile termination rates and not accept undertakings from Telecom and Vodafone.
“MTRs are regulated in almost all OECD countries and are tumbling around the world to ensure strong competition. Consumers should expect the same in NZ. There are over 4.5 million mobile phones in this country and all users will benefit from more innovation, cheaper calls, texts and data services that come from more competition in the telecommunications market,” says Bill.
“While the decision to regulate mobile termination rates is not yet final, we welcome today’s development and will continue to urge the Minister to regulate MTRs and set in place a sea change for New Zealand that will deliver benefits for mobile consumers for years to come.”
