Classic auction ripe for racing fans

With so many racing models up for grabs, this weekend’s Classic and Collectable Car Auction at Turners Auctions promises to pack as much excitement for motorsport fans as the Hamilton V8s did for Holden and Ford enthusiasts last week.

The pièce de résistance up for grabs is a professionally built BMW Motorsport E46 WTCC 320i Race Car, complete with full roll cage, electronics and fire extinguisher protection. Tipped to sell for between $35,000 and $55,000, this car is a must-drive for anyone who loves to race.

“This is a serious racing vehicle which we’re expecting will excite track enthusiasts right across the country,” says Chris Broadhurst from Turners Auctions.

Also up for grabs is a 1992, Nissan Skyline GTR – of the same make and model that made a massive impact at Bathurst in the early 90s.  Known as a ‘Godzilla’, this 4WD, twin-turbo charged race car is estimated to sell for between $15,000 and $25,000.

For those that prefer American muscle, there is a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 1993 – the same model as was used as the pace car for the 79th Indianapolis 500. It comes with the original American build sheet and is expected to sell under the hammer for between $25,000 and $35,000. 

Or if you’re an Aussie racing fan, we have a 1980 Holden Commodore V8, believed to be a genuine HDT limited edition reproduction model of the car that Peter Brock raced so brilliantly at Bathurst. The 5.0 litre, manual V8 even has Peter Brock’s signature and Australian Touring Car Championship badges on it, and is expected to sell for around $22,000.

“It’s rare we have such a high number of fine racing vehicles up for grabs so we’re expecting a lot of interest. But if you’re looking for something else, we still have plenty of other non-racing classics available as part of the auction,” says Mr Broadhurst.

For anyone with a passion for big, old American cars, the white 1980 Ford Lincoln MkVI Continental with Landau roof, opera windows and burgundy interiors is a must-see. Imported from Japan in 2008, it could be parked in your driveway for $15,000 to $20,000.

Another option is a meticulously maintained 1983 Buick Riviera, which features a fully electric roof, leather upholstery and wood grain trim. This car is expected to fetch between $20,000 to $30,000.

And lastly, look no further if you’re after a red hot Ferrari - there are three to choose from this weekend; a 1975, Ferrari 308 GT4 Dino, expected to sell between $32,000 and $40,000, 1975, Ferrari 308 GT4 on sale for between $35,000 and $45,000 and a 1977, Ferrari 308 GTB  expected to go for between $60,000 and $80,000.

The auction will be held at Turners Auctions, Penrose and Leonard Roads, Penrose, Auckland this Saturday, 24 April at 12pm.  For buyers who cannot make it to the auction, it will also be available simultaneously online via the Turners Live virtual bidding software (www.turners.co.nz/turnerslive).
