Students benefit from winner ’ s generosity
Six students at the University of Auckland Business School have benefited from the generosity of Warwick Hunt, one of the winners of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (NZICA) 2009 Leadership Awards.
As part of his prize package for the 2009 Chartered Accountant of the Year Award, Warwick Hunt won $10,000 worth of travel vouchers and a HP notebook computer . Mr Hunt chose to donate the vouchers and the laptop to six accounting students .
On Friday 16 April Mr Hunt presented the vouchers to: Angela Liew, Stephen Jollands, Winnie O’Grady, Lily Chen and Shayuti bin Mohamed Adnan, who all received travel vouchers to help with their PhD studies. The laptop computer was presented to B Com (Honours) student Yana Krivykh.
“I have worked with the Business School to identify those students who have performed well in accounting, and I am happy to donate these prizes to help these students,” said Mr Hunt, PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Middle East Region Managing Partner.
Mr Hunt worked with the University of Auckland Business School to choose the recipients for the vouchers.
“The successful candidates were those who will benefit the most from the opportunity to network, get comments on their work and advance their research papers towards becoming publis hed papers,” said David Hay, who heads the Accounting and Finance department at the university.
NZICA Chief Executive Terry McLaughlin thanked Mr Hunt for his generosity.
“ Warwick Hunt’s award for the Chartered Accountant of the Year reflects his significant business success and leadership of the accounting profession. T his is a wonderful gesture from Warwick to develop young accounting talent and share his success with others,” said Mr McLaughlin.
The annual NZICA Leadership Awards recognise outstan ding individual achievement, organisational leadership and best practice in accountancy. The Chartered Accountant of the Year award recognises the chartered accountant who most effectively demonstrated leadership and contributed to the success of their em ploying organisation, clients or the accounting profession.
Mr Hunt is one of the 6,000 NZICA members who are in based in 90 countries outside New Zealand. ENDS
