Red Kiwifruit Stars at World’s Leading Fruit Show
Red Kiwifruit Stars at World’s Leading Fruit Show
The new ENZARed Kiwifruit, tipped as the most
exciting new variety to hit international markets since gold
kiwifruit, was one of the stars of the show at FRUIT
LOGISTICA 2010, the world’s leading trade fair and
conference event for
the international fresh fruit and
vegetable business.
Turners & Growers said ENZARed attracted crowds of visitors to sample the new Kiwifruit variety at FRUIT LOGISTICA 2010, held earlier this month in Berlin, Germany.
Turners & Growers Managing Director,
Jeff Wesley said ENZARed’s striking flesh colours, exotic
flavour and creamy texture is generating strong interest
from customers across the globe. “From international
market feedback to date,
we see the potential for this
innovative new variety to significantly expand the kiwifruit
category in international markets in the same way gold
kiwifruit has done.”
“The potential size of the market for ENZARed is similar to gold, which currently earns over $250 million annually for the New Zealand industry. A variety of this commercial potential would be a lucrative addition for New Zealand growers looking to grow another premium kiwifruit variety for international supermarkets.”
The first commercial shipment of ENZARed Kiwifruit to ENZA’s European office in October 2009 was quickly sold out at prices 17% above gold kiwifruit in that market. With over 30 years experience in the European fruit business ENZAFruit Continent Managing Director, Tony Fissette, believes ENZAred Kiwifruit is one of the most exciting products to hit the fresh fruit market in years.
The ENZARed Kiwifruit on show in Berlin was harvested in Sichuan, China in late August/early September 2009 and was still in excellent condition at the event five months later.
ENZARed is currently being grown for ENZA in China with several other producer nations coming on line over the next few years. It is one of several new kiwifruit varieties that Turners & Growers has developed for New Zealand growers to produce here once Zespri’s export monopoly is removed. “Ultimately we see the market potential for ENZARed matching the earning power of gold for New Zealand growers.” Jeff Wesley said Turners & Growers is currently propagating ENZARed plants and will have the variety ready for grafting in New Zealand in 2011.
“Turners & Growers plans to see New Zealand growers become international leaders in the production of ENZARed and other lucrative new varieties we have developed. ENZARed is tipped to become the premium variety for international customers and it’s vital that New Zealand reaps the benefits as the Southern Hemisphere’s growing hub.”
