Canon enhances efficiency for TelstraClear

TelstraClear, one of New Zealand’s largest telecommunications players has revolutionised its printing environment and company-wide efficiency by engaging Canon New Zealand to develop a tailor-made in house printing solution.

“We were getting to the point where our multi function devices and desk top laser printers were becoming obsolete,” says Andrew Crabb, TelstraClear’s Chief of Networks. “They regularly needed servicing which caused a great deal of frustration for staff because the equipment started impacting productivity.”

The company was operating over one hundred desk top laser printers and 33 multi-function devices with no quantifiable method to measure the cost of printing. The printer fleet was replaced with 43 Canon multi-functional devices (capable of scan, fax and copy) and 29 laser printers.

“We streamlined TelstraClear’s printing needs and utilised the best technology available to deliver efficiency without compromising quality,” says Peter Chambers, General Manager - Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon New Zealand.

Cost savings are already being realised by TelstraClear as the Canon machines calculate a cost per print job. “Users can tell how much the job will cost before hitting the print button. It has made staff accountable for the cost of their printing and aware of the effect of their actions on the environment,” says Mr Crabb.

Savings are being made in many areas, from the cost per print to the reduction in paper use with all machines now defaulting to double-sided black and white printing which will save the company $110,000 per annum. When combined with an estimated $90,000 saved per year on toner cartridges it is projected that the return on investment for the new system will be as little as nine months.

Canon New Zealand’s tailor made solution for TelstraClear included maintaining security of print jobs while decreasing the number of machines in the fleet.

“We introduced ‘Follow Me’ printing, a system which enables staff to retrieve their printing from any device in the office by swiping their access card,” says Mr Chambers, “The print job remains secure until it is accessed by the relevant user.”

TelstraClear has noticed the value that the machines and software have added to the business. “Copiers were previously viewed as a ‘hole in the wall’ that paper came out of, we are now seeing a change in attitudes as staff embrace them as a business tool,” says Mr Crabb

“We are very pleased with the efficiencies of the new system and the seamless transition Canon facilitated.”
