Labour Day

Auckland – 19th October 2009 - Labour Day was instated for the first time on the 28th of October back in 1890, as a day when all hard working Kiwis could take a day off. A day when all Kiwi blokes knew that the only way to spend Labour Day was with a spatula in one hand, an ice cold beer in the other, and a flaming barbeque front and centre. So why do most people spend Labour Day, well, labouring?

For 27 years, Student Job Search has been breaking the trend by helping Kiwi families to take the day off. Household employers are able to take their gardening, painting, renovating, cleaning; or any other job they traditionally save for Labour weekend, and instead list them on the SJS website (www.sjs.co.nz) for free. Marek Koliandr; Senior Marketing Assistant at the Auckland SJS office, has seen an army of students looking for work over Labour Day Weekend. Koliandr says, “the key benefits for employers using SJS is that it’s a free, value for money service, offering flexibility, especially in terms of job duration and not only during Labour weekend, but all year round.”

Genevieve Pedersen from Bayswater will be employing a student through SJS to feed her two cats Banana and Jamima, while she visits her parents in Napier over this year’s Labour weekend. Being both an employer and a student at Massey University herself, she says:

“I really can’t think of another free internet job site which is more appropriate for jobs of this nature. The one-off job I advertised is easy and doesn’t require any technical skills, just common sense really. It’s the kind of job I would be looking for around Labour weekend if I needed extra cash but didn’t want to commit myself before exam time.”

In the meantime, Genevieve will be interviewing candidates from the North Shore area and she will be picking the one that best fits her requirements. Dan Twohill, for example, will be travelling from Belmond to attend the interview. Dan says he’s confident that he’ll get the job as he is a big cat lover, and also lives just 5 minutes away from Genevieve, which he thinks gives him a big advantage over the rest of the applicants.
