First Gluten free Grocery Store opens in Auckland
First Gluten free Grocery Store opens in central Auckland
Providing a one stop shop filled with a vast
range of delicious gluten free foods, Gluten free Grocer is
sure to create a sigh of relief among Auckland’s ever
growing coeliac, wheat free and Gluten Free (GF)
population.
The Eden Terrace store will stock a range of
freshly baked breads and pastries, a deli selection, baking
supplies, cereals and ready to eat meals. As GF food has a
reputation for tasting terrible, there is a strong emphasis
on all the quality of the products, only those products that
pass the ‘delicious’ test will make it to the
shelves.
The range is all gluten and wheat free and also
includes dairy free, lactose free, sugar free, egg free, nut
free, vegetarian and vegan options.
The website www.glutenfreegrocer.co.nz, launched in July 09, has proved to be a hit across New Zealand with deliveries from Invercargill to Paihia. Immediate growth required the company at only 3 months old to move into a new entirely GF kitchen in Kingsland, and the first in a line up of local grocer stores is set to open 6th November in Eden Terrace. Long opening hours and ample parking across the road will ensure the store is easily accessible, and a focus on GF children’s products will make this store is a dream come true for many frustrated parents.
With gluten free
step-children and a busy catering company, moving into
gluten free foods has been a natural progression for Mitch
King. Tired of buying over priced and tasteless GF products,
he started developing delicious items to freeze for the
children’s lunch boxes.
This soon grew to offering GF
options at his family catering company, Gobble.co.nz, and
within the month Gluten free Grocer was born. What began
with few muffins at home has now become an ever growing
passion for the 23 year old who is now working towards all
products being as GE free, organic and preservative free as
possible.
So what is Gluten? It’s a protein found in
grains including wheat, rye, oats and barley.
Gluten is
found in some soups, mayonnaises and many processed foods as
well as in wheat starch binders and fillers. It can also be
found in medications, some vitamins, some flavoured
commercial spreads, sauces, some hams, almost all of the
biscuits stocked at supermarkets, most cake mixes and common
breads.
