Profit increases averaging 89% for sheep and cattle farms and 56% for dairy farms have been achieved every year for the past three years by users of the eCOGENT farm business process.
This dramatic rise in profitability, which has occurred despite fluctuating exchange rates and farm gate prices, is the result of farmers using innovative profit indicators and analytical software along with mentoring, networking and strategic planning.
Peter Floyd, managing director of eCOGENT, says that refocusing farmer thinking on profit and the basic farming principles that lead to lower costs and more sustainable returns has ensured a profitable future for them and their families.
“We have identified six crucial principles that we call the Six Laws of Profitable Farming. By applying these laws and analysing the best indicators of profit for pastoral farming, eCOGENT members can take advantage of the most comprehensive suite of profitable technologies,” says Floyd.
“They take the guesswork out of decision making and free up more farmer time for strategic thinking and planning. It’s simply sound business logic applied to farming for the first time in a farmer-friendly way.”
The ability to do this is centred on eCOGENT's financial software that uses farmer-generated data to forecast the daily profit from the dry matter consumed by each class of livestock. The results are more objective and allow more profitable decisions on stocking rate and other aspects of farm management.
Floyd believes eCOGENT is a most significant advance in farm business and is the result of a lifetime of practical research and analysis of farm businesses.
eCOGENT has now teamed up with Massey University’s e-centre to make its services more readily available to New Zealand farmers, and a series of information seminars is being held around the country over the next few months.
Environmentally sustainable farming methods are a strong driver of profitability, and the seminars will show how farmers’ environmental goals can be achieved using eCOGENT’s management tools. These can include building up the soil’s organic matter to enliven soil biology, improve drainage and sequester atmospheric carbon.
Carbon farming and its potential for pastoral farmers will also be covered at the seminars, along with practical ways for members to establish positive carbon footprints and trading options. A specialist carbon market consultant will be on hand to explain the opportunities available.
