Passenger numbers on Bay Hopper buses rises
For immediate release: Thursday 8 October 2009
Three months into the new contract, Environment Bay of Plenty’s Bay Hopper bus service is continuing to record increases in passenger numbers with 108,936 passenger rides recorded for September 2009.
Figures demonstrate that passenger numbers have increased for the third consecutive month under the new service. The busiest month on record, which was previously October last year has been exceeded by more than 3700 passenger rides in September this year.
Environment Bay of Plenty Transport Committee Chairman Andrew von Dadelszen said it was particularly pleasing that the new service was generating sustained passenger growth every month.
“These latest figures show people are making the move towards smarter transport options and that’s something we aimed to encourage with the improved services and low floor buses being brought in.”
“This also shows that our intention of having more people on more buses, more often is being followed through.”
“Our best performing routes are still the new routes 1 and 2 which connect the Mount – City – Greerton. Those two services carried almost 32,000 passengers in September,” Councillor von Dadelszen said.
