Slimmer, lighter PlayStation3 New Zealand Sales Take Off

More than 4,600 PlayStation®3 (PS3™) units sold in the first 17 days; PS3 achieves number one selling console in New Zealand three weeks running;
New PS3 250GB console announced

Auckland, Friday, September 25 2009: Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand (SCENZ) announced today that the new slimline PlayStation®3 (PS3™) 120GB console has enjoyed a very successful debut in New Zealand; with more than 4,600 units sold between launch on the 3 September up to 20 September.

PS3 was the number one selling console in New Zealand during launch week and official GfK figures reveal the console has held that position each week since its launch. This news comes as SCE globally announced yesterday at Tokyo Games Show the introduction of a PS3 250GB console launching this October and a Motion Controller arriving mid-2010.

David Hine, Sales and Marketing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand said, “The new PlayStation 3 slim model has experienced exceptionally strong sales in the New Zealand market. Sales exceeded 4,600 units in 17 days and sold through more than 2,800 in the first 4 days alone.”

“Its sleek design and more affordable price point are key factors driving purchase, but more importantly, consumers are now more aware of the full entertainment benefits of the console, including the Blu-ray player and online capabilities. Kiwis now demand more out of their home entertainment experience and the PS3 certainly delivers.”

The new PS3 has everything a family could wish for this Christmas; a broad range of exclusive games, award winning Blu-ray player, media storage and free access to an ever expanding world of content and applications through PlayStation®Network. PS3 owners in New Zealand will be able to enjoy even more entertainment on demand services coming soon to the console, including Vidzone™ – free music video streaming.

The launch of PlayStation 3 was supported by a new marketing campaign developed to communicate the full functionality of the PS3, positioning the console as the ultimate entertainment device to enjoy in the home.

Games are the start of the PlayStation 3 home entertainment experience and exclusive content available this year offers something for the whole family to enjoy. Upcoming blockbuster titles include party favourite, SingStar® Motown, award-winning action adventure, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves™, more time travelling fun with Ratchet & Clank® Future: A Crack in Time, and the genre defining augmented reality game, EyePet™, that interacts with the PlayStation®Eye camera.
