News Release

Mayor Bob Harvey new President of Surf Life Saving New Zealand

Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey is the new President of Surf Life Saving New Zealand - the long serving West Coast lifeguard was elected unopposed at the SLSNZ AGM on Saturday and will steer the organisation through its upcoming centenary year.

Harvey paid tribute to the role surf life saving has played in New Zealand's history.

"We have brought an enormously committed volunteer organisation to the very heart of New Zealand every summer," he said.

"In 99 years we have saved thousands of Kiwis from drowning.  We are one of New Zealand's most respected organisations."

Surf Life Saving New Zealand CEO Mr Geoff Barry acknowledged Harvey's passion for the role of the surf lifeguard in New Zealand society.

"Bob’s appointment is of enormous benefit to the organisation as we move toward celebrating our centenary.  Mr Harvey is a passionate Surf Lifeguard who brings with him an exceptional amount of leadership and business acumen to the job.” said Barry.

Bob Harvey has been Mayor of Waitakere for 17 years and has written extensively about the West Coast and its surf lifesaving history.  He still patrols regularly as a surf life saver.

"I've spent a lifetime on the beach between the flags.  It’s an honour to give back to this organisation that has given me so much," he said.

He said at the Annual General Meeting there will be enormous changes ahead that will go beyond the patrol area.

“Funding and support will be of major importance to the Clubs in the years ahead, as will be environmental and local issues. We wish to be at the very centre of our communities," said Harvey

Mayor Harvey has held nearly all positions at his Karekare Surf Life Saving Club and was a Surf Life Saving sport competitor for more than 40 seasons.

“This is a time of enormous change for life saving. As we look back with pride on 100 years of service, I want to bring vision and leadership for the future.” said Harvey.
