SFWU welcomes
Redundancy Protection Bill
The Service and Food Workers Union Nga Ringa Tota which represents over 22,000 members is welcoming the Redundancy Protection Bill which has been introduced to Parliament by Labour MP Darien Fenton.
John Ryall, SFWU National Secretary said, “The Redundancy Protection Bill is of great significance to our members, many of whom earn just above the minimum wage. Even though our cleaning and catering members are protected by law if there is a change of contractor, there is no such legal protection if an employer is forced to make workers redundant due to a downturn in the business.”
The SFWU is encouraged by the suggestion of guaranteed minimum redundancy payments, which would help our members to get by until they find a new job, and is urging all political parties to back this bill to select committee, and show hard working Kiwis that they are serious about protecting working families through the recession.
