Hui/fono on Maori and Pacific Island Job Crisis
Hui/fono on Maori and Pacific Island Job Crisis
The National Distribution Union is inviting Maori and Pacific Island communities to a hui/fono on responses to the recession this Saturday.
Syd Keepa, Apiha Maori of the NDU hui/fono and CTU runanga convenor says his union is concerned about what is happening in the wider Maori and Pacifica communities as well as to union members who have lost their jobs in the recession.
“Maori and Pacific Island families are taking a hammering from this recession and we need to start organising our own response,” he says.
“Too many of us live on the edge of financial disaster – only one pay away from homelessness and poverty.
‘We are often the first to lose our jobs and the last to find a new one.
“Secure housing and jobs are critical if we are going to avoid losing a generation of young people to poverty and hopelessness.”
“We need to come up with some specific plans for dealing with these problems then put some real pressure on to get them implemented.”
Mr Keepa says everyone is welcome to take part in the hui/fono.
