New Construction Subcontracts Announced

Six new construction subcontracts for the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza were announced today, part of the second round of tenders.

Stadium Trust Development Director Darren Burden says the new subcontracts were approved by the Trust, based on recommendations from main contractor Hawkins Construction and independent advice from project manager Arrow International and quantity surveyor Rawlinsons.

The new contracts cover excavation (Fulton Hogan Dunedin), structural steel (Grayson Engineering), craneage (Daniel Smith Industries), precast bleachers (Concretec), precast flooring (Fulton Hogan Dunedin and Stahlton) and reinforcing steel (Fletcher Reinforcing Dunedin).

Demolition and piling work subcontracts have already been let to Hall Bros Limited and Daniel Smith Industries respectively. Further subcontracts will be confirmed as construction progresses, including the subcontracts for concrete cast on site, cladding and building services. Fulton Hogan Dunedin’s contract for excavation involves levelling the site by cutting and filling material, digging the foundations and removing surplus fill from the site. A total of approximately 22,000 cubic metres of fill will be excavated during construction.

Grayson Engineering will fabricate the large-scale steelwork used in the main roof trusses, columns and arches and in the roofs of the East and West Stands. Structural steel is used for its high-strength, lightweight and durable properties. The main roof arches will span 105 metres over the main pitch supported by the main roof truss on the South Stand which is 130 metres long. A total of 3,200 tonnes of structural steel will be used in the Stadium.

Daniel Smith Industries will supply and operate fixed and mobile cranes including erecting the roofing superstructure and placing precast concrete slabs in position. The most significant lift will be the main truss and columns of the edge of the South Stand which support the main roof arches which span the pitch.

2 Concretec will make the precast concrete bleachers – slabs of tiered precast concrete which are hoisted into place on sloped raker beams to create the seating areas on the North and South Stands. Concretec will manufacture the 524 bleachers at its Oamaru plant, using a total of 1,840 cubic metres of concrete.

Fulton Hogan Dunedin / Stahlton will make the precast flooring for the floors in the North and South Stands above ground level, including the main concourse on level two of the South Stand. A total of approximately 1,000 flooring units will go into making 11,343 square metres of floor area using 1,500 cubic metres of concrete.

Fletcher Reinforcing Dunedin will supply all cut and bent reinforcing steel used in concrete poured on-site. All of the 2,000 tonnes of steel is produced in New Zealand by Pacific Steel. Construction of the Forsyth Barr Stadium at University Plaza began in May this year and the project is on budget and track for completion by August 2011. Mr Burden said 320 people have been inducted to the site, and more than 600 jobs are expected to be created during two year building process.
