Tight times driving demand for rental Ski Accommodation

Tight times are boom times for NZ ski resorts during the July school holidays
As the country continues to tighten its belt, kiwi families headed to the slopes in droves these July school holidays, Bachcare Founder and General Manager Leslie Preston said today.

Ideal snow conditions saw kiwi families holiday in record numbers at NZ’s ski resorts instead of popular beach destinations in NZ.

Bachcare’s holiday homes and rental chalet bookings in all the main ski resort areas increased by more than 200% in July 2009 compared to July 2008.

“Bachcare manages more than 1000 holiday homes throughout NZ, yet demand for rental holiday homes out stripped supply in the popular winter destinations, such as Mt Ruapehu,” said Preston. “We noticed that less people headed to the beaches than previous year, taking advantage of the great ski conditions instead.”

Recent Tourism NZ figures show Australian tourists visiting NZ this year are spending less than those who visited last year; however many Kiwis spent more in an effort to make their July school holiday break that extra bit special.

“We had an increase of almost 10% in bookings for executive holiday home accommodation this July over the same period last year. In addition, demand for add-on services such as cleaning and linen increased by nearly 25%. Kiwi families want to spend as much time as possible on the slopes and come back to a clean, serviced, rental holiday home,” Preston said.

The trends look set to continue as the bumper ski season has kiwis spending their weekends on the slopes. “With cooler conditions forecast to go on through August, this ski season is shaping up to be one of the best on records.”
