Fitec congratulates 2009 Emerging Leaders Scholarships recipients

Four new recipients from New Zealands wood industries have just been awarded Fitec Emerging Leaders Scholarships.

The four recipients are:
Jaden Herron from Hawkes Bay Forestry Contractors Ltd, Hawkes Bay
Fiona Bycroft from ABB Ltd, based at Kinleith Pulp and Paper Mill, Tokoroa
David Pedley from Sorenson Furniture Company, Wanganui
Tony Wiperi-Karauria from Southern Cross Forest Products, Thames

The scholarships are an initiative by Fitec (the Industry Training organisation for the forest, wood manufacturing and furniture industries) to identify emerging leaders, promote excellence and encourage a higher level of career development.

The recipients must choose from either an eight-day Outward Bound Navigation Course, or a three-day NZ Institute of Management Leadership, Motivation and Team Building course.

Jaden, Fiona and Tony have picked the Outward Bound course (worth $4,000) and David has picked the NZIM course (worth $2,000).

Ian Boyd, Fitec Chief Executive, says, Both courses offer recipients the opportunity to stretch and develop their skills so that they can take on new levels of responsibility and become effective future leaders.

Fitec is pleased to be able to help them step up to the next level and we hope they gain a lot from their course.

Twenty-two applications were received in total and eight short-listed applicants were narrowed down to the final four.

Mr Boyd says the finalists should be proud to have been short-listed, and the four who werent chosen will automatically go into the next round.

The second round of scholarships for 2009 will be announced at the Fitec National Training Awards on 10 September, he says, and up to four more scholarships will be awarded in December 2009.

Interested applicants need to be over 21, have at least three years work experience, a minimum of a Level 3 National Certificate and want to be a leader in the forest, wood manufacturing or furniture industry (see: www.fitec.org.nz).
