Business Congratulates Government for a Bold Emissions Target
The government has shown strong leadership and been bold in setting a 10-20% reduction target for our greenhouse gas emissions below the 1990 level according to the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“It is pleasing that the government has resisted pressure from certain groups to impose a totally unrealistic target for New Zealand but the 10-20% target by 2020 is still an ambitious one which will impose significant costs on businesses and households.
“Even though the target will impose substantial costs upon the economy, the Chamber supports action to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. New Zealand must play its part in resolving this global problem.
“While it is important that New Zealand does its bit to reduce emissions, it is essential that we do not jeopardise the economy by moving ahead of our major trading partners.
“We support the need for a global agreement on reducing carbon emissions and we support New Zealand playing a responsible role. In setting our target however, New Zealand needs to move in concert with its key trading partners. In 2020 these are likely to be Australia, China, US, India, EU, Japan and Korea”, Mr Finny concluded.
