Immediate release
Jetstar, the
new star in town
Queenstown will celebrate the arrival of Jetstar’s first flight into its airport on Wednesday June 10, following the launch of the low-cost airline’s domestic New Zealand service.
Queenstown will welcome the ZQN JQ 279 flight from Auckland with a water canon arc when it arrives at 10.50am, and the terminal will be decorated with flags, balloons and banners.
The first Jetstar flight to Christchurch will depart from Queenstown at 11.20am. Jetstar is to operate 84 weekly return services between Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and Wellington.
Joining the celebrations at Queenstown on Wednesday will be Stephen Pahl, CEO Destination Queenstown and Steve Sanderson, Queenstown Airport CEO.
Pahl said the Jetstar flights were a positive addition to tourism in Queenstown, particularly as Qantas will be continuing its Trans-Tasman schedule into the town.
“We are delighted to welcome Jetstar,” said Pahl. “In this economic climate, low cost flights into town are exactly what many of our visitors need. Coinciding with the start of the Queenstown ski season, the timing of the Jetstar domestic service is right on.”
Queenstown’s two main ski areas – Coronet Peak, which celebrated the start of the season on Saturday (June 6) and The Remarkables, which opens June 20 – are both within 45 minutes drive of the airport and have seen significant investment in recent years.
“Queenstown is blessed with spectacular lakes and mountains, and the airport is only 10 minutes from town, allowing our visitors to easily enjoy one of the many exhilarating activities on offer, or to just enjoy the view from our diverse selection of restaurants and bars.”
Flights to Queenstown with Jetstar start at $59 one-way from Christchurch and $89 one-way from Auckland.
