Wellington Businesses Welcome New Inner City Transport Plan
The proposed improvements to the inner city transport system, as endorsed by the city council today, have been welcomed
by the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“A more efficient public transport operation through the CBD is critical to the city’s prosperity and we congratulate
the council for showing leadership on this issue,” said Chamber CEO Charles Finny.
“The Wellington economy relies on an efficient transport system to improve the flow of goods and services and people and
the configuration in the Manners Mall area is not working well.
“We recognise that local retailers have mixed views on this proposal and so we support measures proposed by the council
to minimise the impact on them including the provision of new car parks and the creation of new public space and
pedestrian ways. The proposal is supported by most Wellington businesses.
“Rerouting buses through Manners Mall will shorten the central bus route and remove buses from other key roads - thus
reducing travel times for general traffic as well as buses.
“We expect the Wellington economy to grow and prosper. This means that more people are going to travel and that more
goods and services are going to require access to our transport infrastructure. An integrated and balanced
approach to the challenge of meeting this increased demand is needed.
“We now call on the region to start planning other major parts of the Ngauranga to Airport route such as grade
separation at the Basin Reserve,” Mr Finny concluded.
