Top Public Law Firm Seeks To Expand Its Leadership Team
Chen Palmer New Zealand Public Law Specialists has announced that it will be incorporating under the Lawyers and
Conveyancers Act 2006.
The firm was founded in 1994 by Mai Chen and Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Palmer, and was New Zealand’s first public law
specialist firm. In the last 15 years it has become firmly established as the premier public law firm helping clients to
solve problems with central and local and government. Sir Geoffrey left the firm in 2005 to take up the presidency of
the Law Commission.
The firm won the inaugural Best Public Law Firm awards at the New Zealand Law Awards in 2007 and retained the prize in
2008.
“The firm has a team of very talented public lawyers”, Mai Chen said. “Incorporation provides a platform for those
lawyers – and other public law specialists who want to join us – to move into ownership and take a greater role in the
future of the firm.
“When the firm started, we were told that it would be impossible to practice public law in New Zealand”, Ms Chen said.
“But, as we predicted, MMP created a new market for public law advice on policy, law reform and regulation.
“Solving public law problems remains my first love”, Mai Chen said, “Incorporation will enable me to focus more on that
while sharing the leadership of the firm.”
