MEDIA RELEASE

More Tweet in New Zealand than United States
growing taste for e-commerce and social media
Twitter is a rapidly rising social media platform with 6% of New Zealanders regularly tweeting, an even greater
percentage than in the United States where Twitter use is at 5% of the population.
This is in line with New Zealand’s growing acceptance of social media as an every day means of communicating both
socially, and increasingly, for business reasons too.
Social media - blogs, streaming video and podcasting, as well as social platforms such as Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and
Twitter - is on the rise with most New Zealanders (88%) believing it is here to stay.
The findings are contained in the inaugural Attitude New Zealand * report produced by market research company,
Perceptive, which examined the online habits of 1000 New Zealanders.
The report shows that nearly a third of those surveyed indicated that they read blogs regularly, with 8% writing their
own blogs. The report also shows that:
- 58% use Facebook
- 18% use Bebo
- 7% use MySpace
- 3% use LinkedIn
The Attitude New Zealand report shows that New Zealanders have enthusiastically adopted online banking and shopping with
83% regularly paying their bills, making transfers and checking their balances on the internet.
With 72% indicating they regularly shop online, their favourite sites are Trade Me 28%, EziBuy 4% and Amazon 3%.
Favourite websites are Trade Me 20% followed by Google and Facebook 10% each. Stuff, the NZ Herald and You Tube are
next with 3% each.
* The Attitude New Zealand report, surveyed 1000 New Zealanders throughout the country aged between 15 and 65 plus,
with annual incomes ranging from below $20,000 to more than $100,000.
Perceptive Managing Director, Chris Pescott, says the survey, mapped against the latest government census, has a less
than + or - 3 per cent margin of error. ‘It is as robust and accurate as the best political polls,’ he says.
