New Zealand Contractors’ Federation welcomes “definitive solution” for Waterview

The New Zealand Contractors’ Federation has welcomed the adoption of a ‘definitive solution’ for Auckland’s Waterview motorway extension.

Federation Chief Executive Jeremy Sole said the decision removes uncertainty for the construction industry as well as for the people of Auckland – and could be constructed entirely by New Zealand contractors.

“The industry can now plan with confidence to deliver this important infrastructure project, and it looks forward to this opportunity to demonstrate its skills and capability,” said Mr Sole.

“The chosen solution obviously meets the economic objectives of the government and it is a solution that can be fully delivered by New Zealand contractors, unlike the expensive tunnel option that would have required significant foreign currency expenditure as well as overseas tunneling specialists getting a major share of the project revenue.

“This option is totally within the current skills and capability of New Zealand contractors. The industry welcomes the positive move on the project and looks forward to having the opportunity to prepare proposals for the work.”
