Enabling Poverty Alleviation through Commerce

Aid Policy Changes will Enable Poverty Alleviation through Commerce
The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce fully supports the change in aid policy announced today and hopes local business can play more of a role in achieving economic growth throughout the developing world through commerce and trade.
“The changes to NZAID announced today, particularly the shift in focus toward delivering sustainable growth away from poverty alleviation, are most welcome,” said Charles Finny, Chamber CEO.
“Trade and economic growth has proven to be the most affective way of lifting people out of poverty as millions of people across Asia over the last twenty years can attest to”
“We have long been concerned about the ineffectiveness of NZAID and its simplistic focus on poverty alleviation.
“The Wellington business community looks forward to working closely with NZAID to help create strong and viable economies throughout our region and further a field.
“We believe there is more scope for a formal partnership between New Zealand business and the New Zealand development programme and we will be pursuing this over the coming months.
“We also welcome the structural changes announced today. These will provide greater accountability to Ministers and taxpayers.
“Today’s policy announcement is very much in line with the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce’s policy manifesto prepared prior to the election,” Mr Finny concluded.
