Karaka Third Crop Sires Hold Promise

Karaka Third Crop Sires Hold Promise

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling session, which is set to take place on Monday and Tuesday next week, will see the progeny of seven third crop sires sell through the ring, promising fantastic value to buyers who can pick a future star stallion on the rise.

With their first two-year-olds now rising three, Bachelor Duke, Handsome Ransom, Hawkeye, King's Chapel, One Cool Cat, Savabeel, and Scaredee Cat will all be looking to build on the success of their initial crop this season and into next through their rising three-year-olds and a fresh-faced bunch of two-year-olds.

This newest group of third crop sires follow the likes of Thorn Park, Elusive City, Danroad, and Ekraar who where all in this exact position coming into the Karaka Sale last May. Buyers of those weanlings were well rewarded at the National Yearling Sales in January 2009 through the results of progeny like Hollows (Thorn Park), Metropolitan (Elusive City), Down the Road (Danroad), and Ekstreme (Ekraar) throughout Spring and early Summer.

For example, Thorn Park weanlings averaged $18,000 (3 sold) at Karaka in May 2008, later averaging $72,182 (22 sold) at Karaka the following January. Elusive City results were also dramatic, averaging $6,500 for his weanlings (6 sold) and by January they sold at an average of $32,500 (17 sold). Danroad and Ekraar's results reflected those mentioned above.

Seven stallions provide this kind of opportunity for weanling buyers next week, promising just rewards for their good judgment come January 2010.

Bachelor Duke (Miswaki - Gossamer, by Seattle Slew) - The Oaks Stud

Bachelor Duke's biggest victory came at three when victorious over Azamour and Grey Swallow in the Group 1 Irish Two Thousand Guineas.

Bachelor Duke winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas

A stallion that Australasian breeders have warmed to on the back of promising stock, Bachelor Duke has covered more mares every year since he arrived in 2005. His 49 living foals of 2009 have produced the likes of Andrew Scott's dual stakes placed Bewitch, Karreman Racing's Group 2 fourth placed Obsession, and the Moroneys impressive first-up winner Prince Of Wales, all of whom are Riccarton bound for the NZ 1000 and 2000 Guineas in November.

His freshman crop will be followed by 64 rising 2YOs in 2009/2010. Bachelor Duke is represented by four weanlings next week including:

Lot 253 - Chestnut Colt - Bachelor Duke x Buncrana (Woodman) - Grand Vue Lodge

·         From an international family, this colt's second and third dams, by El Gran Senor and Thatch,  are both stakes winners while his mother has left five winners, all of whom have won two or more races.

Handsome Ransom (Red Ransom - Bianca Lancia, by Mill Reef) - Wellfield Lodge

A top sprinter, Handsome Ransom was superb at three, running a close second in the Golden Rose and finishing third in the Group 3 Hobartville Stakes. His sire Red Ransom can get a classic winner, while his dam is by the inequable Mill Reef.

 Handsome Ransom

Serving four seasons of over 100 mares, Handsome Ransom enjoyed plenty of support with many of his stock being sold as trial winners this season, and Hold Me Ransom and The Cruncher both placing on race day.

Handsome Ransom has four third crop progeny offered at Karaka including:

Lot 171 - Bay Colt - Handsome Ransom x Spring Heel (Lord Ballina) - Goodwood Stud

·         This colt born in early October is out of a daughter of Group 3 winner Star On Ice, herself the dam of Listed Wanganui Cup winner and Group 1 placed Three Chimneys.

Hawkeye (Danehill - Tea House, by Sassafras) - Stoney Bridge Waikato

International globetrotter Hawkeye was at his best at three and best over a mile. He captured the Group 3 Desmond Stakes at the Curragh before placing third in Group 1 contests staged in England and France.

 Hawkeye

Hawkeye has sired close to 50 foals in both his first two crops and has already been represented by Regality, a galloper with plenty of potential given his last start win at Ellerslie for the Stephen McKee - Sam Spratt combination.

Hawkeye weanlings total eight at Karaka including:

Lot 154 - Bay Colt - Hawkeye x Set the Pace (Groom Dancer) - Twin Pines

·         A direct descendent of Group 1 winner Tiptoe (Pakistan), this colt is a half-brother to this season's Listed Sunline Vase placed Set the Tempo (Pins).

King's Chapel (King of Kings - Lower Chapel, by Sharpo) - Windsor Park Stud

King's Chapel has started his stud career off with a bang and is currently New Zealand's leading first season sire.

 King's Chapel

The winner of three races at two, King's Chapel doubled that tally to score in six races at three including the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas, and wins over the older horses in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap and Group 1 Otaki Maori WFA Stakes.

Look-a-like son King's Ransom, a Group 2 and Listed winner this season, will no doubt follow his father's path, a route mapped out by the same David Ellis -Mark Walker Te Akau Stable that trained King's Chapel.

One King's Chapel is offered for sale at Karaka next week.

Lot 311 - Chestnut Filly - King's Chapel x Eliza (Deputy Governor) - Chequers Stud

·         A half sister to a duo of four-time winners, this filly is a grand-daughter of the Group winner Jennifer Rush, the dam of Group 1 1000 Guineas winner Emerald.

One Cool Cat (Storm Cat - Tacha, by Mr Prospector) - Cambridge Stud

Europe's Champion 2YO colt and Group 1 placed at three, One Cool Cat was every bit a serious racehorse.

 One Cool Cat
With stock that look ripe to come into their own as three-year-olds, One Cool Cat has 94 rising three-year-olds and 72 rising two-year-olds from some of New Zealand's finest mares and in Australasia's finest stables which gives him every chance to produce the goods next season.

He has already left a winner in Cat's Whiskers, and has sired David Payne's lightly raced Winter King  who beat Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Onemorenomore by over two lengths when they ran second and third respectively to Real Saga in the Listed AJC Breeders' Stakes.

One Cool Cat is represented by eight progeny at NZB's weanling session including:

Lot 251 - Bay Colt - One Cool Cat x Boulevardofdreams (Dagger's Drawn) - Seaton Park

·         An early foal born 18 September, this colt is the second foal of Group 2 Championship Stakes winner Boulevardofdreams, an outstanding 3YO who ran third in the Group 1 Australian Oaks before competing in the Grade 1 American Oaks.

Savabeel (Zabeel - Savannah Success, by Success Express) - Waikato Stud

Group 1 placed at two, Savabeel came into his own at three winning at Group 1 WFA level in the Cox Plate (defeating Fields of Omagh and Starcraft), and beating his own age group in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.

 Savabeel

Like One Cool Cat, his stock look sure to come into their own at three, with some of Australasia's leading stables stocked with Savabeel progeny. Serving 120 mares each year he has been to stud, Savabeel has plenty of ammunition for New Zealand and Australian racetracks next season.

He has already sired a Group winning Australian juvenile in My Emotion, and in New Zealand his son Warrentherooster placed second at his last start in the Listed Champagne Stakes for leading  trainer Peter McKay.

Savabeel is represented by nine weanlings at Karaka starting Monday including:

Lot 103 - Bay Colt - Savabeel x Nat the Brat (Racing is Fun) - Waikato Stud

·         Closely related to this season's Listed Wanganui Guineas winner Takeanotherchance, this colt is a half sister to stakes performed 2YO Vera Pro Gratis, being out of Group 3 winner Nat the Brat.

Scaredee Cat (Tale of the Cat - Last Lady, by Centaine) - Waikato Stud

A leading sprinter and stakes winner at two, Scaredee Cat's best year was his three-year-old season. He won the Group 2 Ascot Vale Stakes down the Flemington straight at three, and also placed fourth against the older sprinters in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.

 Scaredee Cat

He is the sire of over 80 rising two and three-year-olds, and to date has left John Sargent's smart winning Cat Woman on the track. His progeny are well liked in the sales ring with multiple lots making $100,000+ plus as yearlings at Karaka over the past two years off his initial $5,000 service fee.

Scaredee Cat will be represented by 18 weanlings at NZB's weanling session including:
