Wgtn Wind Farm Great News for Region and Country

Media Release

29 April 2009

New Wellington Wind Farm is Great News for the Region and Country

The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the official powering-on of Meridian Energy’s new wind farm at Makara in Wellington.

“Project West Wind will enhance security of supply to the North Island and increase the supply of electricity for the country,” said Chamber CEO Charles Finny who attended the opening today.

“The timing of today’s powering on ceremony is significant given the recent failure of the cross-strait transmission line.

“The wind farm is generating both economic and employment growth for the region and will continue to do so as it is completed and beyond. It is a great asset for the city.

“Wellington’s wind offers a natural advantage for provision of an increasingly important source of renewable energy. We look forward to more wind farms being built in the Wellington region.

“The Chamber has been a strong advocate of this project from day one, both in the media and in the submissions process.

“Taking advantage of this natural resource is a key component of the Chamber’s vision for the development of the regional economy and Meridian Energy should be congratulated for achieving this milestone,” Mr Finny concluded.
