Wellington Celebrates Earth Day With Organic Coffee
Wellingtonians will be able to celebrate Earth Day with free organic coffee on 22 April, in an event being coordinated by Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ).
OANZ, with partners Inca-Fé coffee and Anchor Simply Organic milk, will be giving away free organic coffee in central Wellington from 7.30am to 9.30am on Earth Day, Wednesday 22 April.
OANZ CEO, Dr Jon Tanner, said "long black and flat white coffees will be given away in Wellington's Civic Square, along with information about the environmental benefits of organic farming".
"Conventionally grown coffee is the third most sprayed crop in the world, with potentially devastating impacts on the health of the farmers and their environment.
"Milk in the flat whites will come from organic dairy farms, which have a greatly reduced impact on waterways as a result of avoiding the use of artificial fertilizers.
"The healthy soils and whole-system approach to farming encouraged by organic production has benefits for biodiversity, climate change, water quality and energy use - issues of key concern for sustainability-conscious Wellingtonians.
"Enjoying a cup of organic coffee while finding out about the environmental benefits of organic products will encourage people in the heart of New Zealand's café culture to think about where our food and drinks come from, and the wider costs of producing them", Dr Tanner said.
