Jetstar Will Increase Choice And Affordability

The entry of low cost airline Jetstar into the New Zealand domestic market will result in even greater choice and affordability for South Islanders already well served by a range of airlines from Christchurch Airport, the airport company said today.

Outgoing CEO Rene Bakx said today that the airport company was pleased to see the strong Jetstar brand bring its offer to the domestic New Zealand market, particularly in the current environment. “This new service will increase capacity on the domestic routes out of Christchurch by 36% immediately, which can only have a positive impact on our economy, he said. œDecisive moves such as this in a time of supposed economic difficulties send a positive message to the tourism industry, and this will stimulate travel both for business and leisure.

Mr Bakx said that it was sad to see the end of the Qantas domestic brand at Christchurch Airport. “It’s the end of an era here, with the departure of the Qantas domestic services. Qantas have provided an excellent service to our domestic market for eight years, and while we look forward to a continued strong relationship through the airline™s international services, we™ll see fewer of the distinctive kangaroo tails on our runῷayῳ in the future, he said.

Gareth Owen, General Manager Marketing & Business Development said that Jetstar’s commitment to Christchurch is apparent, and positive for the region. “We’re pleased that our robust relationship with Jetstar over the past 12 months has assisted their entry into the domestic market, and we’re looking forward to working with them on further development opportunities in the future.

From June, Jetstar will operate five return services daily to Auckland from Christchurch (increasing to six in late June), with daily services also operating to Wellington and Queenstown.
