Select Sale Gathers Momentum

It was another solid day's trade on day two of New Zealand Bloodstock's three-day Select Sale at Karaka, with good competition still witnessed on many of the yearlings catalogued for sale today.

Selling started in a similar fashion to yesterday, but strengthened further as the day progressed. With 457 of the Select Sale offering now through the ring, the average has increased to $37,894, with a median that's held steady at $30,000 and a clearance rate that's crept up to 70%. Total takings so far are $11,406,000.

Yesterday's top price of $125,000 (Lot 625) was equaled or surpassed on six occasions today. The new highest price of the session came at Lot 861 with the colt by Pentire from winning Zabeel mare Surreal bought by Dean Hawthorne for $175,000.

This was in addition to the $30,000 Pentire colt purchased by Hawthorne later in the day (Lot 930), and the eight yearlings bought by him at the Premier Sale, including the second top price of the week at $775,000 (Lot 454), making him the third leading buyer of the Premier session.

Paul Moroney Bloodstock was active again today to complete Day Two as the leading buyer of this session with 14 yearlings purchased for $781,000. Moroney's top lot so far is the Pentire colt bought yesterday for $105,000 (Lot 591). His top price of the day was $100,000 paid for the Postponed colt from Tights mare Tights Delight at Lot 895, offered by Henley Park in Cambridge.

Overtaking Twin Pines as the leading vendor so far this session is Windsor Park Stud with 21 of their 28 horses offered generating $871,000, at an average price of $41,476. The stud's top price came at Lot 819 today, with the Thorn Park colt from Group 1 winner Silver Chalice (St Hilarion) bought by Magus Equine of Hong Kong for $140,000.

Featuring prominently in the top lots, one of the sires making its mark so far this session is Rich Hill Stud sire Pentire, sire of Group 1 winners including Xcellent, Zarita and Mufhasa. So far 11 of Pentire's Select Sale yearlings have sold for an average of $75,000.

Waikato Stud sire O'Reilly is currently the leading sire by aggregate at this session with 17 yearlings sold for $905,000 at an average of $53,235, and a top price of $125,000 (Lot 888).

Day Three of the Select Sale commences tomorrow at 11am at Karaka with Lots 961 to 1184. The Festival Sale will then follow on Sunday and Monday.
