Fashionable District Tries To Entice David Beckham
Auckland's Newmarket is using David Beckham's favourite food to try to entice the visiting international football star.
"As the country's fashion capital, we would love to have David Beckham walk our streets and shop in our stores. He is the biggest name in international sport and the most fashionable," says Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association.
Mr Brewer said Newmarket will try to entice Beckham with something he may find simply irresistible - his favourite flamed grilled chicken for free.
"We know he loves Nando's Chicken and so we're working with our local restaurant to make sure the red carpet is rolled out. To help entice him into Newmarket, we will shout him and his entourage as much Nando's as they can eat."
David Beckham's love for Nando's was made evident during his visit to Wellington last year.
Mr Brewer believes the recently opened Nando's restaurant upstairs in Newmarket's Rialto Centre on Broadway is the flashest Nando's in town and so fit for a star.
"Then with a full stomach, he can shop until he drops. Newmarket boasts exclusive apparel stores that stock some of the Victoria and David's favourite labels including Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Teverniti So Jeans.
"Given he'll get plenty of New Zealand dollars for his American money, he's going to discover some great international fashion at a great price. Although somehow I suspect he's not so driven by price," says Mr Brewer.
