Grand Opening For Nelson Award-Winner
Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Apartments held its official grand opening last Friday, a timely celebration after clinching the Supreme HANZ Award for Excellence last month.
The unique 4+ star village-style resort began its multi-million dollar development five years ago and outgoing Minister of Tourism Damien O’Connor joined industry partners, guests, locals and hotel staff to officially declare its completion.
O'Connor praised the developers for having foresight and belief in the project, saying it was an important addition to the region and adding that the impact of its relationship with Accor Hotels should not be underestimated.
"Nelson and Tasman now have that huge chain working for us, and that is so important," O'Connor said.
Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Apartments joined the Accor network in May this year, the group’s first property in the Nelson-Marlborough region. As well as taking out the HANZ (Hospitality Association of New Zealand) Supreme Award, the resort was also judged Best Hotel Accommodation in New Zealand and was a finalist for Best New Hotel, Best Restaurant and Excellence in Customer Service.
Following the last stage of expansion, Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco now has 20 hotel rooms, 42 one-bedroom cottages and 38 two-bedroom cottages set amongst picturesque gardens, as well as extensive conference and event facilities, health and beauty spa, pool, gym facilities and the award-winning The Orangerie restaurant. Completing the unique village feel, guests can also visit an onsite craftsman jeweler and Ursula Harris’ new hairdressing salon.
Grand Mercure Monaco co-owner and Managing Director Claire Davies says they are thrilled to be celebrating both the completion and the recent awards scoop.
“The whole team is delighted to be recognised in this way and this success is a reflection of the passion and care that goes into ensuring our guests enjoy a fantastic experience at the resort,” she says. “Having such a unique product with a true village atmosphere ensures that we stand out from other resorts in the area and we now also have the expertise of Accor’s global network behind us.”
Accor welcomed the addition of the hotel in such a beautiful and popular destination. Located just a few minutes out of Nelson, providing easy access by air and road, the resort is an ideal base to explore sunny Nelson's culture and art, scenic wilderness and world-famous vineyards.
The buildings have been painstakingly created to capture the integrity of village life, using timber salvaged from the Nelson Wharf and overlooking finely manicured gardens and a quaint village green. With its stunning setting and excellent facilities, Monaco is also a superb location for conferences, weddings and other special occasions.
