RailCorp Selects Unisys for Pilot Project

RailCorp Selects Unisys for Identity and Access Management Pilot Project

RailCorp to implement identity and access management solution to securely manage access to critical information resources

Rail Corporation New South Wales (RailCorp) has awarded Unisys an Identity and Access Management (IAM) pilot project to manage employee identity verification and access to three of the organisation’s key enterprise applications.

The solution, based on Sun’s IAM Java Suite, will use identity data to control access to the organisation’s human resources application, Ellipse; its network access repository, Active Directory; and its safety management application, First Priority Enterprise. It is expected to be finalised in December 2008.

“RailCorp is committed to providing safe and reliable rail passenger services,” said Vicki Coleman, Group General Manager, ICT RailCorp. “This makes it essential to have a robust system for managing access to our critical business applications, particularly given our large long-term employee and contractor-base.”

“The Identity and Access Management solution will allow RailCorp to introduce greater rigour into the lifecycle management of who is authorised to access these applications,” Ms Coleman said.

The strategic plan for the Identity and Access Management platform will involve creating rule- and role-based policies about who can access critical information resources. Detailed profiles about each user – typically employees, contractors and suppliers – include their personal credentials and professional roles and are maintained in a central repository that allows businesses to easily manage and audit access rights to sensitive network data.

In May 2008, Unisys was appointed by RailCorp to implement an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solution based on EMC’s Documentum. The solution, which involved developing RailCorp’s ECM methodology and implementing the ECM platform, is key to RailCorp’s strategy to provide all employees with a single web-user interface, or portal, to access all electronic content.

RailCorp was formed by the merger of the State Rail Authority of NSW and the metropolitan functions of the Rail Infrastructure Corporation in 2004. It aims to provide safe, clean and reliable passenger services through its two brands, CityRail and CountryLink. Each weekday the NSW rail network supports more than 900,000 passenger journeys and 190,000 tonnes of freight movements.
