Regional Finalists Named In Chip Shop Competition

MEDIA RELEASE
31 October 2008

Regional Finalists Named In That’s Life Best Chip Shop Competition

Over 80 chip shops from around the country have been recognised as the nation’s top chip shops, after being named regional finalists in the That’s Life! Best Chip Shop Competition 2008.

The top shops vied against more than 400 chippies from around the country to be named regional finalists in the Competition which hunts for New Zealand’s healthiest, tastiest and crispiest chips.

As regional finalists, the shops are now in the running to take out the top spot in the national Competition.

The Chip Group Chairperson, Glenda Gourley, said public text voting initially determined the top 20 shops in each of the six competing regions around the country.

“During October, the top shops were visited by mystery judges. This year, judges were on the lookout for shops that were following the recently launched ‘New Zealand Standards for Deep Fried Chips in Independent Fast Food Outlets’. Other areas to come under the judges’ scrutiny were: chip freshness and colour, shop cleanliness and customer service.

“A chip sample from each shop was sent away for fat analysis, and only those containing a fat level of less than 11 percent made the grade,” Glenda said.

Heart Foundation nutritionist, Judith Morley-John, said the fat analysis component of judging reflects just one of the aims of the Chip Group.

“The Group has been working together to lower the fat content of New Zealand’s favourite takeaway for a decade. If chip shops follow the industry Standards, shops can reduce the fat in chips by as much as 20 percent.

“The Standards include: using thick, straight-cut chips, which absorb less fat than crinkle-cuts or shoestrings; cooking at 175 -180°C and, draining the cooked chips correctly – commonly referred to as the ‘shake, bang and hang’ method.

“This year the average fat content of all regional finalists decreased to 8.38 percent compared to last year’s average for the regional finalists of 8.87 percent. This confirms that the healthy frying message is getting through.”

With the Competition almost complete, judges are now deliberating on who the six regional winners and overall grand national winner will be. Details are expected to be announced on 14 November.

The ‘That’s Life! Best Chip Shop Competition 2008’ is the country’s only national chip shop competition and this year is supported by: That’s Life!, ‘Goodman Fielder’, ‘Huhtamaki’, ‘Bakels’, ‘Burns & Ferrall’, Food2Go Magazine, McCain Foods (NZ) Ltd, ‘Moffat’, ‘Mr Chips’, ’Potatoes NZ, ‘Premo Filtration’, Southern Hospitality, ‘Kauri’, ‘Alfa One’, ‘Eurotech’ ‘Burns & Ferrall’, ‘Groenz’ and, ‘The Heart Foundation’.
