Local cable jointer takes top prize at industry competition
Dave Hogan has had many career highlights during his 19 years in the electricity supply industry, but winning this
year’s ESITO Cable Jointer Competition is his biggest yet.
Since moving from the United Kingdom to New Zealand three years ago, Mr Hogan has worked as a cable jointer for
Paraparaumu based company Linework and Stones Limited. He was one of twelve experienced cable jointers drawn from
companies throughout the North Island to compete in the one-day ESITO Cable Jointer Competition held at Mystery Creek
Events Centre in Hamilton.
The competition involved three events – a theory test, practical first aid exercise and live low voltage cable jointing.
“The low voltage cable jointing was the most testing event,” said Mr Hogan.
“We only had 1.5 hours to open, test and cut the cores of two cables and then make a transitional straight joint before
we started losing points, so it was crucial not to make any mistakes.
“All the people watching, and a judge looking over your shoulder, added to the pressure but it was a great experience.”
Mr Hogan was rewarded with a Panasonic 42-inch plasma television from Cuthbert Stewart Limited.
“I was determined to make it into the top three but was genuinely surprised when I was announced as the winner,” said Mr
Hogan.
The runner-up was Mark Tetauru from Northpower Limited (North Shore). Third place went to Hamish Kerr from Waipa
Networks Limited.
The ESITO Cable Jointer Competition is organised by ESITO with support from premier sponsor Tyco Electronics NZ Limited.
