Public land for affordable homes welcomed by industry

Milestone Homes is pleased with the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday to free up public land over the next four years to provide affordable housing to low income families.

“As a company committed to building affordable homes, we welcome any Government changes that make owning a family home a reality for more New Zealanders,” says Stephen Murray, Business Development Manager, Milestone Homes.

“Milestone Homes already has 40 house plans which offer affordable, low maintenance, quality homes through standardisation and simplification of the design and building process. But there are many factors beyond our control that contribute to the cost of a home, such as availability of land and building and consent fees, and we support any changes that bring these costs down.

“It is good to see that affordable housing is a priority for both Labour and National, and this policy certainly goes a long way to addressing the issue particularly in Auckland. However, we feel that it is important that people are given the opportunity to own the land that their house is built on so that they have an asset which can grow and appreciate in value over time.”
