42 Below Offers University Course For Just $50

In these times of economic downturn 42BELOW is giving New Zealanders a break by offering a University Short Course for just $50.

42BELOW’s Vodka University offers a practical short course in the art of cocktail making – an important skill that 42BELOW believes will help win friends and influence people (or, at the very least, put them under the influence)!

Cocktail making has long been the domain of the professional bartender, but the 42BELOW Vodka University is opening its doors to the general public so everyone now has the opportunity to develop their cocktail repertoire. 

Hosted by Vodka Professors Jacob Briars and Justin McKenzie, the classes teach the fundamentals needed to impress friends and families at any cocktail soiree.  The course delves into the world of cocktails and vodka, and encourages students to hone their skills while creating a selection of classic creations – in the name of cocktail comprehension.

Senior lecturer Justin is one of 42 Below’s longest serving academics. Justin’s unique talents have seen him enjoy a 15 year long relationship with the hospitality industry, both working behind the bar and sitting in front of it. As a 42BELOW Vodka Professor Justin’s job is to encourage people to open their palate to the wonder of cocktails.

Jacob Briars, or the original ‘Vodka Professor’ as he is otherwise known, is renowned for his knowledge of spirits and has conducted spirit and cocktail sessions for consumers for a number of years. Despite studying law and economics at University and a stint with the New Zealand Labour Party and Ministry for Justice, Jacob found the lure of bartending too hard to resist.  This saw him making cocktails at legendary Wellington cocktails lounges Matterhorn, Chow and Motel, and winning Bartender of the Year in 2002.

Never one to miss a good party, the Vodka Professor has been mixing drinks for the rich and infamous for a number of years. His drinks are so memorable that he has been thanked in a Golden Globes acceptance speech for Lord of the Rings by Elijah Wood!

“Vodka U” will be held in the 42BELOW Vodka University Building (Level 2, 20 Customs St, Britomart), with one session daily (6-8pm), Thursday – Saturday from October 16th - Saturday 20th December. Costs are $50 per person.
