Sacred Hill
scoops three gold medals at 2008 New Zealand International
Wine Show
Sacred Hill Winery has been awarded three
gold medals at the 2008 New Zealand International Wine Show.
The medals were awarded for the 2006 Sacred Hill Wine Thief
Series Syrah, 2007 Sacred Hill Wine Thief Series Chardonnay
and 2007 Sacred Hill Basket Press Merlot Cabernet.
The medals for the largest wine competition in New Zealand were judged under the watchful eye of two of the country’s legendary winemakers, Larry McKenna and Peter Cowley. Over 2000 wines were presented as part of the competition and these latest wins confirm Sacred Hill’s reputation for producing quality New Zealand wines.
The Wine Thief Series wines are Single Vineyard wines from proven vineyard sites in Hawke’s Bay, the Chardonnay grapes are produced from the Riflemans Terrace and the Syrah from the Estate Gimblett Gravels vineyard.
“This is the first National or International Show that wines from our Wine Thief Series have been entered. Two wines, two Golds! It’s fantastic to create wines that stand out as some of the best produced locally,” says Sacred Hill Chief Winemaker Tony Bish.
The grapes for the 2006 Sacred Hill Wine Thief Syrah and the 2007 Sacred Hill Basket Press Merlot Cabernet originate from a Sacred Hill vineyard located in the Gimblett Gravels region in Hawkes Bay.
“We are really excited that two of these gold winners are from Estate Gimblett Gravel vineyards which show the outstanding nature of this sub region for producing high quality red wines,” says Bish.
Overall Sacred Hill Wines was awarded three gold, silver and five bronze medals.
“This being an International Show, these results are further evidence that Hawke’s Bay produces world class wines from Chardonnay, Bordeaux red varieties and Syrah,” says Bish.
These wines are now eligible for The Champions List which will be announced at the Awards Dinner at the Crowne Plaza on Saturday 27th September.
