September 13, 2008

Boutique Christchurch designer wins NZ bathroom of the Year and hauls in 13 national kitchen and bathroom awards in two years

Boutique Christchurch designer Indesign has won the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) NKBA bathroom of the Year award to take its haul of national kitchen and bathroom awards to 13 in just two years.

Indesign partner John Gaynor won the best bathroom of the year award at the National Kitchen and Bathroom Awards in Auckland. His achievement earned him a trip to Atlanta to attend the NKBA USA annual kitchen and bathroom industry show and conference.

He also named the top South island designer and won highly recommended bathroom. His business partner Davinia Sutton – last year award winner, won best renovated kitchen, was the Open category winner and won highly recommended bathroom also.

Indesign is a small design practice, specialising in internal architecture designing kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, wardrobes, furniture, media rooms and storage solutions. They are based in Christchurch but they carry out work throughout New Zealand.

Last year the company won the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association’s bathroom of the year 2007, runner up in the bathroom of the year, best renovated bathroom of the year, best renovated kitchen of the year, South Island regional winner, highly commended kitchen and highly commended bathroom.

No previous award winner had won more than five awards at once or any design firm had won seven awards before last year in the 23 year history of the awards.

Gaynor said it was amazing to be named best bathroom of the year designer after his business partner Sutton won the same award last year.

``We are a small new design company but we must be doing something right to keep the main bathroom of the year trophy in the company for two years running – and to win 13 awards in two years feels pretty special,’’ he said today.

``Sutton and I bounce ideas and thoughts between each other, on our projects all the time. We support each other in our projects. We specialise in attention to detail.

``We become deeply involved in projects and need support from each other during the design process. We feel it’s not necessarily being the biggest, just the best,’’ he said.
