Whitcoulls Celebrates 125th Anniversary with “A Little Bit Wonderful”

One of the country’s most iconic retailers, Whitcoulls, celebrates its 125th anniversary with the launch of a new advertising campaign that brings “A Little Bit Wonderful” to the New Zealand public.

Whitcoulls has played an integral part in creating special moments for millions of New Zealanders since founders George Whitcombe and George Tombs combined their experience in printing, bookbinding and bookselling to establish a business in the late 1800’s, which has since gone on to prove the test of time.

The campaign celebrates the magical human moments that occur every day to a heart-warming soundtrack played by the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.

An example of one such moment sees a husband in the doghouse with his wife take an interesting approach to winning her round. Forget the cliché of a bunch of flowers, he tries a little harder to bring back her smile by leaving a series of post-it notes around the house, to show her he cares. A pile of freshly laundered clothes bears the message “I washed and ironed”, the dog proudly displays a note proclaiming “I’ve been fed” and at end the day the wife rolls over in bed to see a note affixed to hubby’s mouth saying “Sorry for snoring”.

These ads aim to remind people of the little things that make life a delight – choosing the right name for a new baby or giving a card to a colleague who’s moving on.

The quirky tones of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra highlight the pieces of magic that can be found every day, with their unique renditions of Israelites (Desmond Dekker), Ruby Don’t Take Your Love To Town (Kenny Rogers), Sophie (Good Shirt) and Feliz Navidad.

Whitcoulls Sales and Operations Director, Sheryl Green comments on the ads that signal a new phase in the company’s long history “Celebrating the company’s 125th anniversary has brought to the fore the strong connection the public has had with the brand for over a century. We feel that now is the right time to remind people of those special moments that have been borne out of a trip to Whitcoulls.”

She adds, “From Whitcoulls’ beginnings as a publisher in educational books to the current day retail operation, the company in essence has been responsible for bringing a little bit of wonderful to our lives. This sentiment has formed the basis of our new campaign.”
