Fashion district to entice Beckham

Fashion district to entice Beckham with his favourite food

"David Beckham's visit will possibly be the biggest international media opportunity Auckland will get until the 2011 Rugby World Cup and so lets embrace it with open arms," says Auckland's leading shopping district, Newmarket.

"This is a huge opportunity which will provide great international exposure. The Auckland Regional Council needs to be commended for pulling this all together," says Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association, following the ARC's confirmation today of the global football star's visit in December.

"As the country's fashion capital, we will certainly be doing all we can to encourage David Beckham into our area. He is the biggest name in international sport and the most fashionable."

Mr Brewer said Newmarket will try to entice Beckham with something he may find simply irresistible - his favourite flamed grilled chicken for free.

"We know he loves Nando's Chicken and so we're working with our local restaurant to make sure the red carpet is rolled out. To help entice him into Newmarket, we will shout him and his entourage as much Nando's as they can eat."

Mr Brewer believes the newly opened Nando's restaurant upstairs in Newmarket's Rialto Centre on Broadway is the flashest Nando's in town and so fit for a star.

"Then with a full stomach, he can shop until he drops. Newmarket boasts exclusive apparel stores that stock some of the Victoria and David's favourite labels including Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Teverniti So Jeans.

"Given he'll get plenty of New Zealand dollars for his American money, he's going to discover some great international fashion at a great price. Although I suspect he's not so driven by price.

"This is a great opportunity for Auckland to shine and we'll be doing all we can to be part of it," says Mr Brewer.
