sky tower RELIGHTS AUCKLAND’S SKYLINE tonight
Tonight Auckland’s skyline returns to its former splendour when the Sky Tower is re-lit for the first time since the
first power saving campaign began two months ago.
SKYCITY Auckland reduced its power usage following the introduction of the Powersavers campaign, and then on June 10
turned off the Sky Tower lighting altogether. The decision to relight the Tower was made in conjunction with the
company’s power supplier.
Simon Jamieson, General Manager SKYCITY Auckland Hotels Group, said: “From the outset we supported the power saving
request, noting our responsibility as a major focus and beacon of the Auckland skyline. We are proud the Sky Tower could
lead the way.”
John Foote, General Manager, Mercury Energy says that turning off the Sky Tower lights was a very symbolic gesture that
reinforced the electricity industry’s appeal to reduce consumption.
“SKYCITY’s support of the conservation drive helped to encourage the public to use energy efficiently,” said Mr Foote.
The 328m Sky Tower has been an Auckland icon for 11 years and is often themed to mark significant community events. It
draws 800,000 visitors annually.
The Tower will be lit gold from Friday, August 8 in support of New Zealand’s Olympic athletes going for gold in Beijing.
