Massive TradeMe scam uncovered
Internet watchdog group ScamBusters has issued an urgent warning for TradeMe members who may have purchased a laptop from a trader known as n_sale_z.
Spokesman Alf West said that the group has identified just over $46,000 worth of non-existent goods sold by the trader this month, making this the biggest single scam that they’ve uncovered so far on TradeMe.
“This person went by the name of “Lina” from Napier. We’re advising anyone who’s bought a laptop off this person and not received their goods to contact the Police as a matter of urgency”, he says. “The seller is of Asian origin and we believe that there’s a very good chance he may try to flee the country.”
Buyers seeking help or information can discuss the scam with experienced traders on the forums at scambusters.co.nz under “Current Scams”. They should also file a complaint with TradeMe’s Trust & Safety department.
With more than 3,500 registered members spread throughout New Zealand, the ScamBusters operate online forums where their members report scams in progress on TradeMe and assist victims where possible.
