Fairfax Now Only Group With Total Market Coverage

Fairfax Auckland Suburbans now the only Auckland wide community newspaper group offering total market coverage

Fairfax Media is now the only Auckland wide community newspaper group offering total market coverage, after APN announced that from the 17th of July they are withdrawing The Aucklander from home delivery.  The Aucklander will now appear as an insert in Thursday’s edition of the New Zealand Herald.

According to the latest Nielsen National Readership Survey, Fairfax Media’s stable of 10 Auckland Suburban newspapers reaches a total of 673,000¹ readers aged 15+.

Fairfax Auckland Suburbans also reach 300,000² or 80.4% more readers than The Aucklander.

Fairfax Media’s General Manager Suburbans, David Penny says: “The survey results show that Suburban newspapers remain an integral part of our communities.  In fact more Aucklanders read a Fairfax Media Suburban title than any other Auckland publication.  The Suburban group reaches 75.8%³ of Aucklanders across a week.”

The Aucklander’s reach into South and West Auckland will be particularly affected by this change where Thursday’s New Zealand Herald readership is approximately half of Fairfax’s Auckland Suburban titles.  Thursday New Zealand Herald penetration into Auckland stands at 41.8%4.

“Through this change APN has effectively reduced the number of potential readers of The Aucklander in these areas,” says Penny.

“While publications such as Property Press seem to be pulling away from direct home delivery and The Aucklander is making this marked change to its distribution model, Fairfax Media is maintaining its commitment to households throughout Auckland.  Our suburban newspapers enable a localised connection directly relevant to each community.

“Fairfax Media is proud that our publications are welcomed into the homes of Aucklanders, providing our readers with news and information about what is happening in their local neighbourhoods,” he says.
