Tourism research website revamped

22 May 2008 - For immediate release

Launched today, the Ministry of Tourism’s revamped research website (www.tourismresearch.govt.nz) promises easier access to valuable tourism data. Website usability experts were employed and users surveyed to come up with a simple, easy to understand structure.

“We’ve streamlined searching for data by providing tiered information so that users can more easily find the quick facts they’re looking for, and those with in-depth research needs, can get right into the data.” A major step forward has been the introduction of easy to use Excel pivot tables for analysing the Commercial Accommodation Monitor as well as the international and domestic surveys. This will make the key data more accessible to a wide user base.

An additional feature is the inclusion of technology that analyses tourism flows throughout New Zealand. The Tourism Flows Model has been converted from individual PC based software to a free-to-access application that is available on the website.

“We think this is a world first in tourism research,” said Bruce Bassett, Ministry of Tourism Research Manager. “What was only available to only a few, because of cost, is now available to anyone with an internet connection.”

The Tourism Flows Model allows users to analyse particular roads or air routes to look at traffic levels past, present and forecast up to seven years ahead. Data can be broken down to origins of both international and domestic travellers.

“The re-launch of the tourism research website is a bold move towards improving data use by the tourism industry and underscores the Ministry’s commitment to providing the tourism industry with world-leading research resources,” said Mr Bassett.
