Investors urged to consider “House 4 Hospice"

18 April 2008: Hospice Wanganui and Harcourts Wakelin Real Estate are urging property investors from around New Zealand to consider buying a special house in Wanganui that is being auctioned next month to benefit the hospice.

The three-bedroom house was given to Hospice Wanganui by an anonymous donor last year and then moved onto a large section donated by Wanganui couple Clarry and Penny Inman. Over the past few months the house has been completely renovated and the section landscaped – all at no cost to the charity thanks to the generous support of around 70 volunteers, tradespeople and professionals along with various local businesses, including major sponsor Mitre 10.

The house, which is located at 9a Kotare Street in the suburb of Aramoho, is now being marketed and auctioned for free by Harcourts Wakelin Real Estate who recently formed a three-year partnership with Hospice Wanganui which involves substantial financial support in addition to practical assistance.

Hospice Wanganui Chief Executive Officer Karen Anderson says the House 4 Hospice project is the largest fundraising initiative the not-for-profit palliative care provider has ever been taken on.

“It’s been a really huge undertaking, and one we simply couldn’t have done without all of the support we’ve received from the dozens volunteers, skilled tradesman and local businesses who have been involved. The generosity of the Wanganui community, particularly the building fraternity, has been quite overwhelming and we are incredibly thankful.”

Mrs Anderson says the donated house has been renovated throughout to a very high standard and she is hopeful it will attract interest from owner-occupiers and investors alike, particularly those interested in ‘giving back’ to the community via their purchase.

“It’s basically a whole new house – it’s got new piles and a new roof, a number of interior walls have been removed or moved, there are also new entrances, French doors have been put in and new windows, the interior has also been re-lined and painted and there’s new wiring and plumbing throughout. In addition the house has a new kitchen and a new bathroom, the flooring is all new and the exterior has been repainted too.

“So the house now boasts three bedrooms, an open plan lounge and dining are, a modern kitchen, a lovely bathroom, all the standard chattels and some extras too including a heat pump/air-conditioning unit and an alarm system too.”

The large section, which also accommodates a single-car garage, has been extensively landscaped too to include a driveway and turning bay, paths, an entertaining area, fencing and extensive planting.

Grant Wakelin, the Director Harcourts Wakelin Real Estate which has offices in Wanganui, Rotorua, Taupo, Turangi, Dannevirke, Palmerston North, Feilding and Foxton, says Harcourts has been thrilled to get behind the House 4 Hospice fundraiser.

“Hospice Wanganui provides a valuable service and to help ensure it can continue to operate Harcourts Wanganui recently formed a three year partnership with the charity, including agreeing to get right in behind this special community project,” he says.

All proceeds from the sale will benefit Hospice Wanganui which provides multi-disciplinary palliative care services from a purpose-built building that accommodates a five-bed inpatient facility, day care, out-patient support staff, administrative areas and a chapel.
