Fairfax Media Puts Name To New Zealand Business Hall of Fame

Fairfax Media is to become the naming sponsor of Enterprise New Zealand Trust’s New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.

Since its formation in 1994, the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame has elected a total of 92 laureates who have helped shape the economic development of this nation.

The first of eight laureates for the 2008 Fairfax Media New Zealand Business Hall of Fame will be announced in May and will bring the total number of laureates to 100. These new laureates will be admitted to the Hall by the Governor General at a gala evening on 16 July.

At present the Fairfax Media New Zealand Business Hall of Fame is a ‘virtual gallery’ on ENZT’s website, but will soon become a permanent display at the University of Auckland’s new Business School.

Tony Caughey, Chairman of Enterprise New Zealand Trust, said the Trust’s primary role was to promote an enterprise culture among school students.

“The Fairfax Media New Zealand Business Hall of Fame plays an important role in this programme as it recognises and celebrates business excellence, putting business leaders forward as role models for our youth.

“To achieve recognition, laureates must have demonstrated how wealth is created and also have made a significant contribution to society.

“We are delighted to have the country’s leading media company as the naming sponsor of the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame

“Media plays an important role in covering business affairs by going behind the headlines to analyse and comment. The better the quality of business coverage, the more the community will understand the importance of business to creating employment and wealth.”

Joan Withers, Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax Media said that the work of the Trust was important, from promoting enterprise education and financial literacy through schools to acknowledging excellence in business leadership.

“Its work enhances the potential supply of business leaders of the future.

“Fairfax Media is passionate about business, and on making business issues better understood.

“Business journalism is very high on our strategic agenda and we have set ourselves the goal of being the preferred source of information when business people and investors want the most insightful coverage of and commentary on what is happening in the markets, business and the economy.

“The Fairfax Media New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in association with the Chambers of Commerce acknowledges current and past business leaders, and puts them on a pedestal that celebrates achievement.”

Withers said the Fairfax Media New Zealand Business Hall of Fame was among a number of major business news initiatives it was planning involving its daily and weekly newspapers, and online outlets.
